Which expandable food dehydrator should you choose?
Choose Presto 06300-05 if four included trays and an eight-tray maximum suit your plans; choose NESCO FD-75A if you want five included trays and a twelve-tray maximum. Additional trays sold separately: neither maximum is the number supplied in the box. These are two complete appliances, not spare-tray packs. Presto exact listing; NESCO exact listing.
Buy room to expand, or buy your capacity now?
An expandable appliance lets you start with the supplied trays and buy compatible additions later. A fixed-capacity cabinet may be a better fit if you already need its full included capacity. Compare the cost of the complete appliance plus the extra trays you expect to buy, and check storage and loading space before deciding.
Our everyday comparison groups listings with five or six included trays; our batch comparison groups eight or ten included trays. This page instead checks a documented expansion path. A replacement tray or liner does not by itself turn a fixed-capacity machine into an expandable one. Dishwasher cleaning permission is a separate purchasing criterion.
Presto 06300-05: when it fits
If four trays cover your usual batch, start there and add compatible trays up to eight. Additional trays sold separately. Match the 06300-05 generation and accessory part before ordering. Check the exact listing.
NESCO FD-75A: when it fits
If you want five trays now and room to expand, the stated limit is twelve. Additional trays sold separately. Match FD-75A accessories; FD75PR is not an automatic substitute. Check the exact listing.
How this expandable shortlist works
Only two exact listings qualified. Eligibility requires a complete appliance, the reviewed title and feature text, a model-bound expansion statement, and usable listing review data. A changed title, revision or feature record is excluded until reviewed again. We do not fill a third position with an accessory or an unverified device.
Ranking uses the same review-and-documentation formula as our other comparisons, ordered by raw score descending and then product slug for exact ties. No expansion bonus or inferred heater wattage is added. Both listings currently use the documentation completeness fallback. The main cards and compact cards show the same editorial scores.
Exact generations, accessories and review limits
The Presto listing title says 06300, but its model field and feature text identify 06300-05. This comparison covers that current generation only. Its manufacturer instructions describe a top-mounted fan, four included trays, an eight-tray maximum and hand washing only. Do not treat all historical 06300 versions as equivalent or substitute instructions from a different generation. Presto stock 0630005 product page; model-bound manual finder; manufacturer instructions.
NESCO evidence here comes from the exact FD-75A Amazon listing and manufacturer-authored FD-75A content on that listing. The manufacturer's FD75PR website page is not proof of FD-75A specifications or accessory compatibility; we do not automatically equate those models. NESCO FD-75A listing and model content.
The maximum is a manufacturer/listing limit, not measured performance. It does not establish drying speed, usable food area, temperature uniformity or safe food preparation. Check the exact generation, approved accessory part and supplied instructions before adding trays; compatibility is not universal.
Amazon reviews belong to the listing and may span historical revisions or variants. They are not independently verified reviews only for the current Presto 06300-05, nor evidence that every reviewer used the exact configuration described here. Review averages and counts inform our editorial formula; they do not establish generation-specific performance. We have not physically tested either appliance. Presto listing reviews; NESCO listing reviews.
Where the exact Amazon listing text states both a tray count and a heater wattage with explicit units, our documented spec-fit score is 100 × [0.6 × min(stated trays / 10, 1) + 0.4 × min(stated watts / 1,000, 1)], rounded to a whole number and shown as a 0–10 rating. Only wattages between 200 and 2,000 W are treated as heater ratings. Listings missing either stated value use the documentation completeness score below instead; ties use the product slug. Tray count and wattage are seller capacity claims, not drying-performance measurements, and this index is not a customer review.
Where a listing has no documented spec-fit inputs, our documentation completeness score is 100 × [0.5 × min(documented feature bullets / 8, 1) + 0.3 × min(product images / 5, 1) + 0.2 × (brand documented ? 1 : 0)], rounded to a whole number and shown as a 0–10 rating. Every input is read from the stored Amazon listing record, so the same listing always produces the same score. This measures how completely the listing is documented — it is not a performance test, a quality measurement or a customer review.
Where Amazon publicly displays customer reviews for a listing (average star rating and review count captured from the public product page), the raw editorial score is 100 × [0.45 × (Amazon average / 5) × min(review count / 50, 1) + 0.35 × min(log10(1 + review count) / log10(1 + 5000), 1) + 0.20 × documentation score / 100]. The confidence factor min(review count / 50, 1) damps averages based on very few reviews, and the logarithmic volume term rewards large public review volumes, so widely and highly reviewed listings rank ahead of thinly reviewed ones. Listings with no captured public review data use the documentation score alone. This combined index reflects the public Amazon reputation and the listing documentation — it is not a physical test and not our own product testing.
The displayed editorial rating is the raw blended score divided by 10, shown to one decimal on a 0-10 scale. No catalog normalization, rank interpolation, forced top score, fixed floor or artificial gap is applied. Equal scores remain equal because the available data does not justify a distinction. Ranking follows raw score descending, then listing slug for exact ties; this stable identifier is not a quality signal. This is not a physical test result or an Amazon customer rating.
