Dehydrator tray planning tool

Estimate how many rectangular trays your planned single-layer layout would occupy. Measure the area your prepared food needs with the required gaps already included.

1. Your prepared layout

For example, two 10 × 20 inch layouts including airflow gaps total 400 square inches. This is a planning input, not a food-weight conversion.

2. Usable area per tray

Exclude the edge, center vents and any area the manual says to leave clear. For round trays, use a measured usable-area equivalent rather than the diameter.

What this estimate means

Tray count = total prepared layout area ÷ usable area per tray, rounded upward. The example 400 ÷ 120 requires at least 4 trays. Irregular pieces, round trays and support rails may require more space.

This tool does not determine safe temperature, drying time, food weight, energy consumption or storage life. It does not mean you may add more trays than the manufacturer permits. Use a food-specific preservation method and the exact appliance instructions.

Start with choosing a dehydrator, check trays and liners, and read temperature and safety before planning a batch.
